Theme G: (Incap)able bodies and (im)potent sexualities

The aim of this workshop is to explore and discuss the questions of how the connection between masculinity and certain (idealized) bodies and imaginations of the gendered biological bodies' potentials influence different men's and women's possibilities and experiences. Research in sports, cultural studies, consume studies and science studies are all areas that have contributed to the critical analysis of the reproduction of dichotome views on gender, embodiments and stereotypical bodily ideals and heterosexualization. Furthermore, these research areas have stressed potentials for challenging traditional imaginations of the body as defining and limiting the gender in the cultural negotiations about gender and sexuality. These perspectives facilitate more pluralistic views on gender and the awareness of people's multitude of possibilities for experiences with bodies, identities and social relations.

Papers could address questions like:

How does 'biology' and biologizations influence the understanding of men's and women's bodies? And which practical and ideological meanings do they have? Can naturalizations of the categories 'man' and 'woman' in the natural sciences be said to imply heterosexualization?

How are meanings of the body, 'biological' sex and sexuality represented and negotiated in concrete situations?

Which masculinities are presented as (im)possible in f.ex. the media? How does the disciplining of the body and the bodily ideals in sports influence the understanding of gender?
