Theme P: Transnationalization of masculinities – Economy and globalization

Transnationalization shows itself in many ways and has many implications for men and gender relations, while men and masculinity are often taken for granted in different transnational contexts. Questions as (forced) migration, war, international relations, transnational organizations, and trade pose as central arenas of gender politics.  This workshop aims at investigating and discussing from an interdisciplinary perspective the different ways in which states, institutions, and (large) firms on the transnational level constitute and are constituted by men and masculinities. Globalization of  business and the expansion of transnational organizations constitute a special relation to men and masculinities, which has gained attention with Connells idea of a “transnational business masculinity” which is seen as a new form of (hegemonic) masculinity.

This workshop centers on questions of how economy and “globalization” are constituted by and themselves are constituting gender order/s, and how such orders can be understood and interpreted in relation to men and masculinities.

In which changeable ways does local and regional constructions of masculinity show themselves in a “globalized” world? How can changes be described and understood?

How can the connections between local, institutional, and global gender relations and construction of masculinities be criticized, described, and interpreted?

Which theoretical problems and possibilities can be seen?
